How Many Academic Libraries Are Licensing Enterprise AI?

p p strongEnterprise AI licensing is no longer hypothetical for academic libraries, but the market is still divided almost evenly among buyers, nonbuyers and institutions preparing to enter./strong/p p Primary Research Group found that 38.46% of surveyed libraries currently license or lease an AI application. Another 23.08% plan to do so, while 38.46% report no current license and no stated plan. That creates a market in transition rather than a settled standard./p p Institution type matters. Half of doctoral institutions and 44.44% of research universities reported current licensing. Among master's-level institutions, however, 66.67% had no license and none reported plans to add one. ChatGPT Edu or Enterprise alone was licensed by 23.08% of the full sample that share reached 50% at institutions with more than 8,500 students and zero among the smallest colleges./p p The buying criteria are also revealing. Respondents placed cost, FERPA exposure, privacy and the use of institutional data for model training ahead of raw performance. Some open-ended comments described proposed costs in six figures&mdasha reminder that a technically impressive tool can still fail the institutional business case./p p Libraries evaluating enterprise AI should therefore compare more than output quality. A defensible scorecard should cover price per eligible user, authentication, data retention, administrative controls, accessibility, support, acceptable-use enforcement and evidence of actual demand. The opportunity is sizable, but so is the risk of paying institution-wide prices for departmental adoption./p p  /p/p
