Should Academic Libraries Use Motion Detection to Measure Space?

p strongMotion and occupancy technology can improve evidence about library space, but the case for installation depends on a defined decision and a privacy-conscious design./strong/p p Primary Research Group's study of 51 academic-library leaders examines occupancy-sensing seats, thermal motion sensors, laser sensors for lighting and systems such as OccuSpace, SenSource and Spaceti. Among colleges with more than 14,000 students, 23.1% were using occupancy-sensing seating. Younger library leaders were more likely to report being somewhat satisfied with motion technology satisfaction was weaker among older groups./p p A sensor count is useful only when it answers a management question. Libraries may need to know whether group rooms sit empty, quiet areas fill first, a floor justifies longer hours or a renovation actually redistributes demand. Door counts cannot show all of that, but detailed tracking can also create concerns if patrons believe their movements are being monitored personally./p p Good implementation minimizes data. Libraries should favor anonymous aggregate measures, publish a plain-language notice, define retention periods and prohibit secondary uses that were not part of the original project. Pilot results should be compared with manual observations and short user surveys because a technically accurate count can still misinterpret why a seat is occupied or avoided./p p The best technology is not the one that produces the most data. It is the least intrusive system that supports a real decision about hours, layouts, energy use or capital investment./p p  /p
