Which Faculty Are Most Likely to Deposit Work in Digital Repositories?

Primary Research Group surveyed 725 faculty drawn from nearly 500 colleges and universities. Its public findings show that faculty ages 40 to 49 were more likely than other age groups to deposit work in a repository. Deposit behavior also rose with personal income, while senior academic title was associated with a greater likelihood that a publication fee had been paid for the deposited work./p

These patterns matter because a repository can look technically successful while representing only the faculty already most able to navigate publishing systems. Early-career scholars, lower-paid faculty and instructors working outside research-intensive departments may face different barriers: time, uncertainty about publisher permissions, lack of accepted manuscripts or low awareness of deposit services./p

Repository managers can respond with segmented service. Offer mediated deposit for time-constrained researchers, rights checking for authors uncertain about agreements and brief outreach timed to promotion, grant reporting or annual-review cycles. Dashboards should measure participation by discipline and rank, not only total item counts./p

The commercial and management question is therefore broader than repository size. Institutions need to know who deposits, what they deposit, which services lead to action and where valuable scholarship remains absent. A strong benchmark turns faculty demographics and behavior into an outreach plan&mdashwithout confusing the most visible participants with the whole campus./p
