Are Rare-Materials Digitization Programs Properly Insured and Trained?

p strongInstitutions digitizing fragile materials often have technical experience, but insurance certainty and consistent training remain weak points./strong/p p Primary Research Group found that only 16% of respondents were certain their institutions carried insurance covering accidents during digitization. Training capacity rose with institutional scale: 60% of respondents at institutions with more than 23,000 full-time-equivalent students had an in-house digitization-skills program./p p Equipment choices also reveal the diversity of practice. Forty percent considered flatbed scanners almost always important, even though the most delicate or unusually shaped items may require overhead systems, cradles or other specialized setups. The correct tool depends on binding, surface, size, light sensitivity and the amount of handling an object can tolerate./p p A risk plan should identify who approves handling, how an item's condition is documented, whether transport is permitted and what happens after damage. Training should include object handling and emergency response as well as camera or scanner operation. Vendors need equally clear standards and responsibility for custody./p p Insurance cannot repair irreplaceable cultural material, and training cannot eliminate every accident. Together with careful ion and documentation, however, they convert digitization from an improvised project into a controlled preservation and access workflow./p p  /p
