Are Inconsistent Campus AI Rules Confusing Students?

p strongMany students can navigate course-by-course AI rules, but a meaningful minority are confused&mdashand some are already experiencing disciplinary consequences./strong/p p Primary Research Group found that about 20% of surveyed students were confused by institutional or instructor policies on generative AI. Another 7.5% had been reprimanded for AI use. About one-quarter held a highly negative view of their college's AI policy, indicating that communication problems can affect trust as well as compliance./p p Attitudes differ by field. Business and engineering students were more supportive of ive AI use, while humanities students were more likely to prefer bans or discouragement. A single rigid rule may therefore collide with legitimate differences in how disciplines define authorship, calculation, coding, drafting and evidence./p p Consistency does not require identical permission in every classroom. It requires a common way to express the rule. Colleges can label assignments as AI prohibited, AI limited, AI permitted with disclosure, or AI required. Orientation materials should show examples and provide a standard citation or acknowledgment format. Course syllabi can then explain the learning objective behind any stricter boundary./p p For campus leaders, the key metric is not how many policy documents exist. It is whether students can correctly predict what is allowed before they submit work. Regular student testing, review of misconduct cases and faculty support can reveal where the language fails. Clear rules protect academic standards while giving instructors room to teach the norms of their fields./p p  /p
