Are Special Collections Part of Institutional Strategy?

p strongSpecial collections may be central to institutional identity while remaining weakly connected to formal planning, assessment and campus decision-making./strong/p p Primary Research Group found that only 34.62% of surveyed departments maintained a written special-collections strategic plan 11.54% had one in development and 46.15% had none. Among institutions with more than 40,000 students, just 16.67% had a plan. A valuable collection, by itself, does not guarantee a visible operating strategy./p p Assessment is similarly uneven. Only 46.15% tracked key performance measures, 30.77% produced an annual special-collections report and 7.69% assessed user satisfaction every year. Collaboration inside the library was stronger: 61.54% were satisfied or very satisfied with relationships across library units. Influence beyond the library was much weaker no respondent reported high involvement in campus-wide strategic planning./p p A concise plan can connect collecting, teaching, research, digitization, preservation, fundraising and staffing to institutional priorities. It should name a small set of outcomes, assign ownership and show how progress will be reported. Metrics might include course use, researcher demand, collections processed, material preserved, external funds raised and communities represented./p p Planning is also an advocacy tool. When leaders can show what the department is trying to achieve&mdashand what resources each outcome requires&mdashspecial collections becomes easier to place inside budget, curriculum and advancement conversations./p p  /p
