How Safe Do Students Feel in the Academic Library?

p strongMost students may regard the academic library as a safe place, but the averages conceal important differences in nighttime confidence, theft exposure and harassment risk./strong/p p Primary Research Group found that about 2% of surveyed students had experienced theft in an academic library. The reported rate rose to 3.7% among students from the highest-income families and 5.88% among Latino students. Those subgroup differences are a reminder that a low overall incidence can still represent a meaningful problem for particular communities./p p Nighttime travel produces an even sharper contrast. Only 16.12% of female respondents said they felt very safe walking home from the library at night, compared with 35.5% of male respondents. Psychology and education majors were also more likely than students in other fields to feel unsafe in the library after dark. The survey further found elevated reports of sexual harassment among transgender students./p p Libraries cannot solve every campus-safety problem, but they influence lighting, sightlines, staffing, escort information, incident reporting and the experience of stacks and study areas. Safety reviews should include the route to the building and the hours when students are most likely to leave&mdashnot stop at the library doors./p p Leaders should combine incident records with anonymous student feedback and walk-throughs involving students from different groups. The useful question is not simply whether the library is generally safe. It is where, when and for whom confidence breaks down&mdashand which operational change would reduce that gap./p p  /p
