Survey of Undergraduates: Interest in Coursework & Careers in Primary, Secondary & Higher Education Administration — report cover

This report measures the level of interest of undergraduates at 4-year college in the United States in coursework and careers in educational administration at all levels, with data broken out separately for higher education and K-12 education.  The report also presents data on the overall level of interest in general undergraduate and graduate study in education, allowing the study’s end users to specify interest in administration in the general population of students, and in the population of students with an interest in any aspect of teaching or education.

Data in the report is based on a representative sample of 1,566 full time undergraduates from BA, MA and Research level institutions in the USA.  Data is presented in the aggregate and also for a broad range of criteria including but not limited to survey participant age, major or intended major, SAT/ACT scores, college grades, gender, income level of family of origin, geographic origins, employment situation, year of class standing, sexual orientation, political views, personal level of religiosity and many other variables. A detailed description of the sample breakdown by these criteria is also available in the study.

Just a few of the findings from this 60-page report are that:

Overall, 14.17% of respondents indicated they were likely or highly likely to apply to a graduate school of education at some point in the future or had already applied

Nearly 24% of mixed race respondents had strong interest in higher education administration.

Humanities majors were more than 400% more interested than engineering majors in jobs in K-12 education administration.
