Survey of Sponsored Research Agreements between the Private Sector & Higher Education 10/2014 — report cover

This study presents data and commentary based on a survey of 19 offices of sponsored research (or offices with similar responsibilities) largely from major universities in the United States and Canada, as well as some non-academic non-profit research organizations.   The study helps its readers to answer questions such as:  How many sponsored research projects are being conducted and is the trend towards more or less?  What scientific fields account for most of the research agreements?  How to universities and other research oriented non-profits market themselves to the private sector?  How often do they experience conflicts of interest and what do they do about them? How long does it typically take to negotiate contracts? How large are offices of sponsored research?  What is the role of advisory boards? Conferences and seminars? Blogging and social media?  And much more.
Just a few of the report’s many findings are that:

Mean funding received through sponsored research projects for the colleges and other organizations in the sampled in 2014 was an estimated $19 million.

A mean of 13.71% of the sponsored research agreements for the organizations in the sample involved multiple sponsors.  This was far more common for the largest universities in the sample, those with more than 33,000 students; for these institutions a mean of 27.5% of their sponsored research agreements had multiple sponsors.

The use of industry advisory boards for higher education offices of sponsored research was particularly common for organizations whose main area of technology innovation was software and information technology.

Sponsored research in medicine/healthcare accounted for a mean of 39.38% of the dollar volume of all agreements for the organizations sampled.
