This report looks closely at how the pandemic has impacted enrollment and new course developments in art departments of colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Thirty one art department chairs and deans provide detailed data on class enrollment prior to and throughout the pandemic, and their predictions for the future. In addition, they provide insights on new courses and programs in development, and their views on enrollment prospects for coursework in a broad range of subject areas including painting and studio art, photography, ceramics, art history, web design, games and digital arts, sculpture and many other subject areas.
Just a few of this report’s many findings are that:

Community and 4-year colleges were more likely than doctoral or research universities to experience a decline in art class enrollment.

As a median, respondents expected a 5% increase in art class enrollment in for the upcoming 2021-22 academic year

35% of the public college art departments sampled offered non-degree certificate programs.

Remote learning played an important role in the retention of international students.
Data in the 99-page report is broken out by many variables related to the individual survey participants and their institutions including but not limited to size of the art department measured by faculty size, and by number of art majors, host country, tuition level, public/private status, and college type or Carnegie class.
