Primary Research Group Inc. has published the International Survey of Business & Economics University Faculty: Outlook for New Positions & Tenure, ISBN 978-1-57440-486-9

The study presents results of a survey of business and economics faculty about job openings and tenure prospects in their departments, giving detailed data on the overall number of faculty, number of new position openings, nature of position openings, speed with which new openings are filled and the perceived odds of obtaining tenure.

Data is based on a survey of more than 180 scholars drawn from more than 100 major research university academic departments and MBA programs in the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland.  Research findings are broken out by various criteria, such as type of university, MBA program or Grad/Undergrad business or economics program, scholar’s country, gender, political views, academic subject specialty, academic title and other criteria

Just a few of the 54-page report’s main findings are that:

• Male respondents were more likely to have tenure than were female respondents (57.14% vs. 39.58%)
• Tenure status varied by discipline and type of program. Respondents in Economics and Management were most likely to report having tenure, 66.67% and 61.75%, respectively.
• Respondents teaching in MBA programs reported poorer prospects for tenure than those teaching in undergraduate or PHD-academic programs in economics and other related subjects outside of MBA programs.
• Respondents from institutions in Quartile 1 of the US News and World Report rankings reported the highest mean number of position openings.
• Over half of those with the rank of Assistant Professor or Reader were on a tenure track (51.72%), while 20.69% had tenure, 13.79% were not on a tenure track, and 3.45% were adjuncts/part-timers
