Primary Research Group has published: Profiles of Research University Institutional Digital Repositories, ISBN 978-157440-528-6
This study profiles the efforts of six renown research universities to develop and manage their institutional digital repositories. The institutions profiled are: Carnegie Mellon University, Indiana University Bloomington, Northwestern University, the University of Navarra, the University of Pennsylvania and Clemson University.
The study gives a detailed look at various platforms and other applications used for repositories – Figshare, Hyrax, Bepress, DSpace, Recolector de Ciencia Abierta (Open Science Harvester), and OpenAIRE. In addition, repository directors discuss key issues such as relations with academic social media sites such as ResearchGate, copyright and licensing issues, means of assuring faculty cooperation, usage statistics, repository marketing, relations with journal publishers, repository publishing and peer review ventures, data repository issues, funding and revenue generation and much more.
Among the report’s many highlights: David Scherer, Scholarly Communications and Research Curation Consultant at Carnegie Mellon University discusses how the Library marketed its Kilthub repository to CM faulty. Jamie Wittenberg, Head of the Scholarly Communication Department, and Robert McDonald, Associate Dean for Research and Technology Strategies at Indiana University Bloomington discuss their repository’s close relationship with the University Press. Chris Diaz, Digital Publishing Librarian at Northwestern University, relates how his university cooperates with and sustains and is sustained by the Samvera network. Dr. Rocio Serrano-Vicente, Subject Librarian at the University of Navarra, Spain, details the major efforts by Spanish and EEC authorities to provide centralized national and EEC-wide repository hubs.
The report was written by Burton Callicott, Instruction Coordinator for the Research and Information Department of the College of Charleston Libraries. Mr. Callicott co-edited and contributed to Making Institutional Repositories Work (2017 Purdue UP) and has co-presented on IRs at The Charleston Conference. In addition to work on repositories, Burton has published articles on sustainability as it relates to libraries and library practices.
