Primary Research Group Inc. has published the Survey of Use of Instagram in Higher Education Marketing, 2019-20 Edition, ISBN 978-157440-585-9

The115-page study presents detailed data from more than 30 colleges and universities about their Instagram Marketing effort.  The report helps its end users answer questions such as: how much are colleges spending on Instagram marketing?  How much do they plan to spend in the future? How do they evaluate Instagram vs. other options?  Which features of Instagram are they using?  Which do they recommend?  How much staff time are they spending on their Instagram accounts?

The data and commentary in the study is highly specific, giving precise data on the extent of use of various Instagram features such as (but not limited to)  Hyperlapse, Live Video, InstaStories, Type Mode, Alternative Text Description and much more.  In addition the study relates hard data and the overall number of Instagram followers, followers from outside the college, number of likes and comments and more highly useful benchmarking data.

Just a few of the survey’s many findings are that:

  • The mean number of total Instagram followers for the college in the sample was 9,594 with a median of 4,555 and a range of 0 to 65,800,
  • 16.67% of survey participants had used Hyperlapse; all use was by survey participants under age 45.
  • All community colleges in the sample used InstaStories in their Instagram marketing efforts.
  • Half of all colleges in the sample charging less than $10,000 in annual tuition had hired a consultant to help them devise their Instagram marketing strategy.
  • Overall spending on Instagram ads by those in the sample will increase by an estimated 12.4% in the following year.

Data in the report is broken out by many institutional variables such as college enrollment size, tuition charged, Carnegie class or type, and public/private status and also by personal characteristics of the survey taker such as their work title, age and gender.
