Primary Research Group Inc. has published the International Survey of Engineering Faculty: Satisfaction with Engineering School Management, ISBN 978-1-57440-682-5
This study presents the opinions of 123 engineering faculty drawn from major engineering programs at research universities predominantly in the USA but also in Canada, the UK, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand.
Faculty give their opinion of engineering school management in all of the following areas: sharing power with faculty, attracting students, enhancing education quality, providing proper research and teaching technology infrastructure, building maintenance, school marketing, adjudicating sexual harassment, deploying distance learning, furnishing library services, assistance for grant applications, fair treatment in hiring/promotion/tenure decisions, promulgating anti-discrimination measures – and much more. In open ended questions faculty pinpoint the best and worst moves made by their engineering school management and evaluate how they have handled the pandemic.
Just a few of this groundbreaking report’s many findings are that:
-
Satisfaction with school marketing efforts to attract new students was lowest among programs in Australia/NZ than elsewhere.
-
77% of respondents specialized in civil engineering were either very satisfied or satisfied with their school’s job placement services for recent engineering graduates.
-
64% of men but only 46% of women were satisfied with their school’s anti-discrimination efforts in hiring, promotion and tenure.
-
68% of faculty in top12 programs were highly satisfied or satisfied with their program’s efforts in helping faculty to attract research grants and other funding.
-
85% of faculty over the age of 65 were satisfied or highly satisfied with their administration’s efforts handling of the pandemic.
Data in the 97-page report is broken out by many variables related to the individual survey participants and their institutions including but not limited to country, gender and age of respondent, engineering school ranking, public or private school status, and engineering specialization.
