This comprehensive 124-page report, based on data from 45 college tutoring programs, presents detailed benchmarking information on spending, technology use, tutor use and retention, program offerings and much more.  It helps its readers to answer questions such as: what percentage of tutoring sessions are being held on line? What percentage in-person? What percentage through group tutoring arrangements? Or by prior appointment? What percentage are walk-ins? Which subject fields account for the most tutoring sessions?  How much are tutors paid? What percentage of tutors are fellow students?  Full time Faculty?  Adjuncts? Professional, non-student tutoring staff?  What has been the impact of artificial intelligence on tutoring?  How are tutoring programs expecting to exploit this technology in the near future? How many students are currently being tutored and are tutoring budgets growing and if so, by how much?

Data in the report is broken out by size and type of college, for public and private colleges, and by tuition level, for easier benchmarking.

Just a few of this study’s many findings are that:

  • 48.89% of the programs surveyed used tutors embedded in ongoing classes.
  • 58.82% of private colleges in the sample offered online tutoring.

  • At community colleges, 31.23% of tutoring sessions were conducted by peers who were currently enrolled students.
  • 4-year colleges reported the longest average duration of tutoring relationships, 8.14 weeks.
  • The mean number of student tutors employed by the programs in the sample increased from 31.8 in June 2023 to 33.54 in June 2024.
