Primary Research Group has published Academic Library Plans for the Audio Collection, ISBN 978-157440-4227

The report looks closely at how music libraries, and general academic libraries with audio collections, are developing and managing their music and other audio assets.  The report gives detailed data on purchases last year and this year of streamed and downloaded audio content vs. audio content purchased in non-networked formats such as CD’s and Blu-rays. The study also looks at the role of consortia in audio content licensing, and presents precise information on purchases from major vendors such as Amazon, Naxos, and many others.

Other issues discussed include: perceived faculty satisfaction with audio resources, the sharing of costs of audio content between the library and various academic departments, use of the learning management system as an audio content delivery system, the equipping of library, music and general classrooms with proper network connections for streamed audio content, preferred contract terms in audio content licensing, use of audio special collections and audio books and more.

Just a few of this 82-page report’s finding are that:

  • On average, libraries spent about $544 on audio resources from Amazon over the past year.
  • In approximately 17% of public colleges, the cost of some music content licenses is shared between libraries and academic departments.
  • 80% of research universities sampled use their learning management system as an audio delivery system.
  • The libraries sampled spent, on average, $3,035 on audio books in all formats in 2015-16 academic year.
