Survey of Library Plans to Provide Recharging for Mobile Devices, ISBN 978-157440-426-5
The study provides data from 39 public and academic libraries about their current policies and plans to provide in-library recharging stations and other recharging options for mobile devices such as laptops, netbooks, tablets, smartphones and other mobile devices. The study gives detailed information on spending, brand preference, forms of equipment needed, strategic citing in the library and other facets of the means to provide the growing number of library users with their own mobile devices with adequate charging capability in the library. The report also looks at the issue of what is an adequate number and proper strategic provision of electric outlets in libraries.
Data is broken out separately for public and academic libraries and by library size.
Just a few of the 67-page report’s main findings are that
· For the entire sample, the mean number of electric outlets maintained for patron access rose by more than 5 to a mean of 35.33 in 2016 and the median rose by 4 to 10 electrical outlets.
· 2.56 percent of the libraries sampled said they do not have wireless chargers for mobile devices but they are plan to acquire them in the next year.
· For Academic libraries, a 37.5 percent plurality said library management had the most influence in choosing charging stations for mobile devices; 31.25 percent said the parent institution’s Technology Department had the most influence, and 12.5 percent said the library’s Information Technology Department was the most influential player.
