The study gives detailed data on how 249 university deans, provosts, administrative and academic department heads and other leaders perceive the problem of discrimination in hiring and advancement at their institutions. Respondents were drawn from major research universities in the USA, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
The study present specific data on how survey participants view the issue of sexual harassment at their institution, and how they view how this term is defined, as well as data on their views of discrimination based on age, gender, social class, sexual orientation, religion, race, ethnicity, handicap and other variables.
Data is provided for each variable separately. In addition, data in the report is broken out by a broad range of criteria including: age, gender, academic title, and compensation level of respondent, and university ranking, public/private status and country of origin of the respondents affiliated institution. The sample is comprised of deans, provosts, chancellors, trustees, vice presidents, upper level administration directors, academic department heads, and distinguished professors.
Just a few of the report’s many findings are that:
-
More than 34% of respondents considered discrimination and bias in hiring to be a problem (28.51%) or a big problem (5.62%) at their institutions. Respondents from institutions ranked highly by US News & World Report (rank < 40) were more likely to see bias in hiring and career advancement as a problem (36.36%) or a big problem (9.09%) than were respondents from other institutions.
-
By country, respondents from Australia/New Zealand were more likely to indicate that the definition of sexual harassment in common use at their institution is too broad (16.00%), while no respondents from the UK/Ireland thought the definition is too broad or too narrow.
-
Private universities were much less likely than public universities to perceive discrimination at their institution based on sexual orientation,1.92% for private universities vs. 9.14% from public universities.
