The study presents extensive data from 167 faculty and administration, primarily drawn from many of the world’s the world’s leading engineering programs, especially from the United States but also from Canada, Australia, the UK and New Zealand.  The study gives highly detailed data on who and how often faculty, staff and administration participate in sponsored research agreements, fee for service agreements, confidentiality agreements, material transfer agreements and other forms of collaboration with private sector and other entities external to the university.  The report enables its readers to answer questions such as: Which faculty, staff and administration have participated in fee for service agreements?  Sponsored research? Confidentiality agreements?  MTA’s? How often do they participate? How many have they participated in in recent years?  What is the general trend at the engineering school in terms of new agreements in these areas? What is the outlook for the future. The study also presents detailed data on engineering department cooperation with medical schools and other biomedical research centers, and on sponsored research with – on the one hand – private sector entities – and on the other – government agencies and not profits.

Data in the report is broken out by many personal and institutional criteria including, gender, compensation level, gender, academic title, field of engineering, engineering program ranking, US/Non-USA and many other variables.  Consequently, report readers can determine how many professors vs lecturers or associate professors participate in sponsored research.  How many fee for service agreements do faculty/staff in mechanical engineering participate in vs. faculty/staff in electrical engineering?  Or robotics? 

Just a few of the report’s many findings are that:

• Overall, 38.32% of those surveyed had participated in a fee for service agreement with a corporation or other organization.  The participation in such arrangements was highly correlated with university ranking; the higher the rank, the greater the likelihood that a survey respondent had participated at some point in a fee for service agreement with a corporation or other entity.
• Virtually no MTA’s were signed by those earning less than $80,000 US per year, and most  were concentrated in personnel in the $80,000 to $125,000 annual salary range.
• A plurality of 41.32% say that the trend in collaboration between engineering programs and  medical schools and other biomedical research centers has remained more or less the same over the past three years while close to 18% say that the volume of collaboration has been increasing while 8.38% felt it was declining.
• Faculty and staff in mechanical engineering were the most likely to report increases in overall sponsored research activity at their universities.
