Press Release | Primary Research Group
Primary Research Group Inc. has published the Survey of Engineering Faculty & Administration: Trends in Engineering Research Funding, ISBN 978-1-57440-546-0

The 75-page study looks closely at the state of affairs of engineering research funding for major engineering programs in the USA, the UK, Australia and Canada.  The report presents data from more than 160 engineering faculty at major research universities, providing detailed information on: the number of grant proposals written, dollar volume of grants won, personal work time spent on pursuing grants, evaluation of the current and future environment for grants and other research support.  In addition, the study gives precise data on the source of grant funding, with specific figures for central government support, state/local government support, private sector support and other sources of support.

Data is presented in the aggregate and broken out by 11 criteria including academic title, university ranking, salary level, gender, age, field of engineering and other factors.

Just a few of the report’s many findings are that:

  • Survey participants spent a mean of 17.53% of their work time applying for grants or otherwise seeking funding sources; the median was 10% and the range, 0 to 90%.
  • Time spent pursuing grants and other support differed significantly by field of engineering with those in biomedical engineering spending the highest percentage of their time on these pursuits – 30% -- and those in computer science/robotics spending the least – 9.9%.
  • For top 10 world programs, the number of grants applied for per researcher in the past year was 2.13.
  •  Full professors were much more likely than assistant or associate professors or readers to feel that conditions were excellent
  •  Researchers in chemical/materials/agricultural engineering were less likely than those in other engineering fields to feel that research conditions were good or excellent.
  • A mean of 47.19% and a median of 50% of grant support came from the Federal or other central governments.
