Approximately 60.42% of law school faculty and staff are satisfied or very satisfied with the fairness and transparency of promotion and tenure decisions at their law schools, according to the Survey of Law School Faculty & Staff: Assessment of Law School Leadership, ISBN 978-1-57440-621-4, just published by Primary Research Group.

The study presents findings from a survey of 96 faculty members and staff from 72 law schools in North America.  The report presents highly detailed data on satisfaction levels with a broad range of law school efforts and characteristics including but not limited to: the law school marketing and student recruitment efforts, recent graduate job placement assistance, policies on sexual harassment and discrimination, cost control and budgeting, law school information technology, provision of help in attracting grants for faculty research, attracting quality students, maintenance of buildings and other physical infrastructure, the quality of legal education, the quality of law school publications, and the overall success of the school’s strategic vision and positioning. 

In addition, in open ended questions, survey respondents point out which aspects of law school policy and management they most support and most dislike.  Also, they choose particularly admirable law schools and law school policies.

Just a few of the report’s many findings are that:

• 71.88% of respondents were satisfied or highly satisfied with their law school’s marketing to potential students.
• Faculty and staff from highly ranked law schools were much more likely to be satisfied with anti-discrimination measures than those from lower ranking law schools. Men were much more likely than women to be satisfied.
• Nearly 27% of assistant and associate professors and lecturers are dissatisfied with the information technology available at the law school.

Data in the report is broken out by numerous useful benchmarking criteria such as law school ranking, enrolment size, for public and private institutions, and by personal variables such as academic title, gender, age and even course load.
